L-Glycine is the simplest of all amino acids. It is a non-essential amino acid that is required for optimal growth and for creatine and protein synthesis in the body. As creatine is a compound that is present in muscle tissue and is utilized in the construction of RNA and DNA, it is conceivable that under some conditions, glycine becomes essential in the human body. Research supports a role for glycine in supporting a wide range of bodily structures and functions, including the release of somatotropin (human growth hormone), memory function, healthy thought patterns, collagen synthesis, normal cell growth and development, glucose metabolism after a carbohydrate load, and preventing unhealthy angiogenesis (blood vessel formation).
L-Glycine therapy readily passes the blood-brain barrier and is probably one of the most important inhibitory neurotransmitters of the brain. In one randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, L-Glycine was tested for its effects on memory in healthy students and in middle aged men. It ”significantly improved retrieval from episodic memory” in all subjects and also significantly improved sustained attention in the middle aged participants.It is now also used by physicians in the treatment of muscular dystrophy and it has also been found useful in the improvement of hypoglycemia. L-Glycine is important for the synthesis of nucleic acids, bile acids, and other non-essential amino acids within the body. Found in high concentrations in the skin and connective tissue, glycine is useful for repairing damaged tissue and promoting healing.
